It was developed and published by Ocean Software in 1993 in North America and PAL regions, and published by Jaleco in 1994 in Japan. The player controls Dr. Alan Grant, a paleontologist who has become trapped at Jurassic Park, an island theme park and zoo populated by genetically engineered dinosaurs. The game's exterior portion is viewed from a top-down perspective, but shifts to a first-person view during interior sections. The game garnered praise for these varied and three-dimensional perspectives, the usage of stereo sound, and the adventure gameplay. In 1994, Ocean released a sequel, Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues, with gameplay which significantly differs from that of the original.

Gameplay e storyline sono basati sull'omonimo titolo NES: il giocatore controlla Alan Grant e deve completare diverse missioni prima di poter abbandonare Isla Nublar. Il nuovo hardware 16-bit però permette un grande miglioramento su grafica e suono (si tratta di uno dei primi videogiochi masterizzati in Dolby Pro Logic), oltre che un radicale cambiamento del gameplay in alcune sezioni. Le musiche sono ancora una volta di Jonathan Dunn. Di questo titolo è stata messa in commercio anche una versione NES non autorizzata da Nintendo, col titolo The Lost World: Jurassic Park, che mantiene le novità in fatto di gameplay discostandosi quindi dalla versione NES ufficiale. Nel 1994 Ocean distribuì un sequel, Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues.
