The story takes place on the moon "Lunar", which orbits an uninhabitable planet known as "The Blue Star". The first two games, Lunar: The Silver Star (1992) and Lunar: Eternal Blue (1994), were released for the Sega CD and serve as the series foundation. The Silver Star and Eternal Blue received critical and commercial acclaim, later becoming the two highest-selling games on the platform in Japan. Remakes of the original games have been released for multiple platforms in the decades since, including Silver Star Story Complete, Eternal Blue Complete, Lunar Legend, Silver Star Harmony, and Remastered Collection. Three spin-off games have been released.

Hecho originalmente para la consola Sega CD, también se han hecho versiones para las consolas Sega Saturn, PlayStation y Nintendo DS. Lunar es una aventura típica de fantasía basada en una luna habitable conocida como Lunar, la "Estrella De Plata" que orbita un planeta parecido a la Tierra conocido como la "Estrella Azul". Después de un desastre terrible, una diosa Althena trajo a gente de la Estrella Azul a vivir en Lunar. Las historias de los juegos se enfocan en la vida en Lunar, así como en Althena y sus aliados. La serie es notable por sus temas de romance, música, y humor.

Le pubblicazioni originali di The Silver Star e Eternal Blue, per Mega CD/Sega CD, sono state in seguito convertite per Sega Saturn con cambiamenti consistenti nella storia e negli aspetti tecnici del gioco. In seguito questi remake sono stati convertiti anche per PlayStation. Il primo titolo della serie fu adattato anche per Microsoft Windows in Giappone e Corea, ed in seguito anche per Game Boy Advance. Una storia parallela, Lunar: Walking School per Game Gear, è stata adattata anche per Sega Saturn, ma non è stata mai pubblicata al di fuori del Giappone. Sostenuta dalla Ubisoft, Game Arts ha creato un nuovo capitolo della serie Lunar per Nintendo DS, pubblicato in America nel 2005. Una remaster de primi 2 giochi della serie "Lunar Remastered Collection" è stata annunciata per primavera 2025, per Play Station 5, Play Station 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam e Xbox One.
