The graphics consist entirely of digitized photographs and digitized sprites. Home console versions were released for the Super NES, Sega Genesis, and Sega CD, and include a revolver-shaped light gun known as the Justifier. The game was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the top five highest-grossing dedicated arcade games of 1993 in the United States. However, it also caused controversy as it allowed players to shoot photorealistic representations of enemies. Lethal Enforcers was followed by Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters. Both games would later be released in the two-in-one compilation Lethal Enforcers I & II (Lethal Enforcers Deluxe Pack in Japan) for the PlayStation. Years later, Konami released the Police 911 series as a Japan-themed sequel to the original plot. This was also followed by the arcade game Heroes of Justice, which was localized and renamed as Lethal Enforcers 3 for Western audiences.

Insieme a Night Trap, Mortal Kombat e Wolfenstein 3D, Lethal Enforcers è considerato uno dei titoli che porteranno alla creazione del metodo di classificazione Entertainment Software Rating Board. Del titolo è stato realizzato un sequel, Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters, pubblicato dalla Konami nel 1994 e incluso nella raccolta per PlayStation che comprende entrambi i giochi della serie.

Era um jogo de tiroteio criado inicialmente para arcade, que colocava o jogador na perspectiva de um policial encarregado de uma série de missões. As fases pelas quais era necessário passar eram: um assalto a banco, um roubo em Chinatown, um sequestro, uma batida a um covil de traficantes e uma apreensão em uma indústria química. Podiam participar até dois jogadores ao mesmo tempo, mirando nos bandidos com armas plásticas que funcionavam a base de um sensor óptico. O Jogo acabou tendo versões para Sega Saturn, Mega Drive e Super Nintendo. Na versão da Nintendo, as placas e referências aos locais chineses foram retiradas para não ofender a comunidade asiática. Mais tarde foi criada uma adaptação para PlayStation e em 1994 foi criada uma continuação no velho oeste.
