The game received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who criticized its punishing difficulty as limiting its appeal, but also making its gameplay more rewarding. A remake, titled Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl, was released for Nintendo 3DS in 2013. A remastered version of the original released for Nintendo Switch and Windows in June 2023 under the title Etrian Odyssey HD.
