As with its predecessor, De Blob 2 was developed for home consoles by Blue Tongue Entertainment and published by THQ, this time in association with the TV network Syfy. Unlike de Blob, however, de Blob 2 was also released for other consoles other than the Wii; the game was released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the Nintendo DS, with the latter version having been developed by Halfbrick Studios and taking place between de Blob and de Blob 2. In 2017, THQNordic collaborated with BlitWorks to re-release de Blob 2 (as well as the first de Blob) for then-current generation platforms. Both games were released on June 22, 2017, for Windows and in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 27, and August 28 for Nintendo Switch.

La mecánica jugable consiste en devolver el color a la monocroma Prismaburgo, salvar a los primanos, pobladores de la ciudad, y vencer a la corporación INKT. Además de los entornos 3D, posee niveles de plataformas en 2 dimensiones, y modo cooperativo para 2 jugadores. Las versiones de Xbox 360 y PlayStation 3 poseen gráficos en 3D estereoscópicos. La versión de PlayStation 3 por su parte, posee el adicional de ser compatible con PlayStation Move. Cabe destacar que la versión de Wii no posee gráficos en 3D ni HD, pero es idéntico a las versiones de Xbox 360 y PS3 en lo que respecta a jugabilidad, sonido y diseño de niveles.

Der Verleger THQ sicherte sich die Rechte für eine Konsolenumsetzung, die vom australischen Studio Blue Tongue durchgeführt wurde. Die Wii-Version erschien Ende September 2008 in Deutschland. Für Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3 und Xbox 360 wurde am 25. Februar 2011 ein zweiter Teil, de Blob 2, veröffentlicht. Im August 2018 wurden beide Teile für die Nintendo Switch veröffentlicht.
