It is the fifth game in the Ace Attorney series, and is set between the events of the third and fourth games, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. While previous games in the series focus on defense attorneys, Ace Attorney Investigations has the player control prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, who investigates five cases that tie together to form an overarching story about a smuggling ring. The game consists of investigation phases, in which the player investigates crime scenes in search for evidence, and rebuttal phases, in which they confront other characters, to hear what they think has happened; the player is able to use evidence to find contradictions in the characters' statements, to get closer to the truth. In den Spielen übernimmt man jeweils die Rolle eines Strafverteidigers, wobei einem die Aufgabe zuteilwird, die Unschuld des eigenen Mandanten zu beweisen. Neben den Gerichtsverhandlungen ist ein wesentlicher Teil der Spiele die Ermittlung und Detektivarbeit. Bezüglich des Genres ist die Ace-Attorney-Reihe sowohl eine Gerichtssimulation als auch ein Adventure (japanisches Adventure). Die gesamte Serie gilt als äußerst erfolgreich. Laut Capcom wurden bis Ende Juni 2020 weltweit mehr als 7,7 Millionen Exemplare der Reihe verkauft. 2006 wurde das Spiel als Manga adaptiert, 2012 erschien ein Film von Takashi Miike, der auf der Videospielserie basiert und 2016 eine Anime-Serie, die auch deutsch untertitelt gestreamt wird.

Come il suo sequel, Ace Attorney Investigations 2, è stato pubblicato solo su Nintendo DS e Android. Sebbene ci siano, come negli altri titoli della serie, discrepanze da individuare nelle testimonianze dei sospettati, il gioco si concentra maggiormente sulla risoluzione di enigmi. Non sono presenti le sessioni di tribunale alternate a quelle di investigazione, ma la storia si svolge sul luogo del delitto e dintorni. Inoltre, è diversa la prospettiva del giocatore: mentre negli altri titoli la visuale era in prima persona, in questo il personaggio appare nella parte superiore dello schermo, ed è possibile muoverlo a piacimento nelle 8 direzioni anche attraverso le stanze, alla ricerca di indizi o per parlare con i personaggi. Nella versione europea il titolo è stato tradotto solamente in lingua inglese, al contrario dei titoli precedenti, disponibili anche in italiano, spagnolo, francese e tedesco.
