Il est basé sur la bande-dessinée du même nom. La version 16 bits du jeu a été adaptée en 2002 sur Game Boy Advance sous le nom La Revanche des Schtroumpfs. Ce jeu a connu deux suites, Les Schtroumpfs autour du monde, sortie en 1996 et Le Cauchemar des Schtroumpfs, sortie en 1997.
