It is the second installment in the James Pond series after James Pond: Underwater Agent and was developed by the same British teams as the original. The title music by Richard Joseph is a marimba-heavy rendition of the RoboCop film theme. James Pond 2 was originally released on the Amiga, Atari ST and Sega Genesis in 1991 by three different publishers. It was next ported to Amiga AGA, Amiga CD32, Game Gear, Commodore 64, Master System, PC, Acorn Archimedes, Game Boy and SNES. It was later redeveloped and released as a budget title for the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, as a download on the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Network store, and the Nintendo Switch.

Dans cette aventure, qui fait suite à James Pond: Underwater Agent, James Pond, alias RoboCod, doit déjouer les tours de Dr Maybe qui a plastiqué les fabriques de jouets situées au Pôle Nord.

Successivamente il gioco è stato convertito anche per Amiga CD32, Atari ST, Game Gear, Commodore 64 e SNES. La versione per SNES è stata ribattezzata Super James Pond in America del nord, mentre nel resto del mondo si è intitolato Super James Pond II. Più recentemente il gioco è stato pubblicato nella linea economica di giochi per PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance e Nintendo DS, e come download per PlayStation 3 e PlayStation Portable.
