Based upon Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball franchise, it is the only game in the series released for the Mega Drive, following the Frieza and Cell sagas. Its gameplay has been described as a combination of the original Super Butōden and Super Butōden 2, consisting of one-on-one fights using a three-button configuration, featuring special moves and two playable modes. With the popularity of the Dragon Ball franchise in European regions and the positive reception of the first Super Butōden entry on Super Famicom, Bandai decided developing Dragon Ball Z: Buyū Retsuden for the Mega Drive but its creation process lasted longer than the Super Butōden sub-series. Dragon Ball Z: Buyū Retsuden est publié par Bandai au Japon le 1er avril 1994, puis en France le 15 juin 1994, où le jeu est intitulé Dragon Ball Z : L'Appel du destin. Le jeu est également publié en Espagne et garde la traduction française. Il propose au joueur de diriger les personnages de l'anime Dragon Ball Z dans un jeu de combat inspiré des épisodes sortis sur Super Nintendo. Une suite avait été annoncée, mais finalement Bandai ne la mettra jamais en chantier.

Il gioco è stato prima distribuito in Giappone il 1º aprile 1994, e in seguito è stata distribuita una versione francese in alcuni paesi europei intitolata Dragon Ball Z: L'Appel du destin (lett. "Dragon Ball Z: La chiamata del destino"). La versione giapponese fu venduta anche in Portogallo, abbinata a un regional converter (Mega Key III). Il gioco non è stato mai tradotto in inglese e distribuito in Nord America. Il gioco sembra liberamente basato su diversi eventi dell'anime di Dragon Ball Z, anche se con una specie di what if? (per esempio, nella storia C-18 ella risulta già sposata con Crilin, mentre nella storia di Crilin lui deve difendere e disattivare per impedire a Cell di assorbirla. Il gameplay e la grafica sono molto simili a quelli della serie Super Butoden per Super Nintendo.
