The story follows defense attorneys Phoenix Wright and Mia Fey, who defend their clients in five episodes. Among other characters are Phoenix's assistant and Mia's sister Maya, her cousin Pearl, and prosecutor Godot. The gameplay is split into courtroom sections, where the player cross-examines witnesses and tries to discover contradictions in their testimonies, and investigations, where they gather evidence and talk to witnesses. The game was directed and written by Shu Takumi as the last game in an Ace Attorney trilogy; he also wanted it to be the final entry in the series, as he felt he had explored Phoenix's character fully. In den Spielen übernimmt man jeweils die Rolle eines Strafverteidigers, wobei einem die Aufgabe zuteilwird, die Unschuld des eigenen Mandanten zu beweisen. Neben den Gerichtsverhandlungen ist ein wesentlicher Teil der Spiele die Ermittlung und Detektivarbeit. Bezüglich des Genres ist die Ace-Attorney-Reihe sowohl eine Gerichtssimulation als auch ein Adventure (japanisches Adventure). Die gesamte Serie gilt als äußerst erfolgreich. Laut Capcom wurden bis Ende Juni 2020 weltweit mehr als 7,7 Millionen Exemplare der Reihe verkauft. 2006 wurde das Spiel als Manga adaptiert, 2012 erschien ein Film von Takashi Miike, der auf der Videospielserie basiert und 2016 eine Anime-Serie, die auch deutsch untertitelt gestreamt wird.
