A spin-off of the Onimusha series, it was the first game in the series to be released for a Nintendo system. It does not follow the storyline of the previous PlayStation 2 games and is considered a side story, but it features a similar plot: a samurai who possesses the Oni Gauntlet can become the Onimusha and fights against Nobunaga and his army of genma.

Survival-Horror-Genre zuzuordnen und spielt im feudalen Japan, wodurch es zahlreiche Bezüge zur Geschichte Japans gibt. Der erste Teil, Onimusha: Warlords, erschien im Jahr 2001 für PlayStation 2 (PS2) und brachte es bis 2006 auf drei direkte Nachfolger. Die Teile eins und drei wurden zudem auf Microsoft-Systeme portiert. Weiterhin existieren mit Onimusha Blade Warriors für PS2 ein Fighting-Game-Ableger und mit Onimusha Tactics für Game Boy Advance ein Strategie-Ableger.
