The game is loosely based on Investiture of the Gods, a Chinese supernatural novel about the fall of the Shang dynasty and the rise of the Zhou dynasty. A Game Boy Advance version, known as Magical Hōshin (マジカル封神, Majikaru Hōshin) and developed by Quintet, was released simultaneously with the GameCube version, known as Battle Hōshin (バトル封神, Batoru Hōshin), exclusively in Japan on March 29, 2002. The PlayStation 2 version, known as Chō Battle Hōshin (超・バトル封神, Chō Batoru Hōshin), has additional characters and gameplay modes.

Il s'apparente à un Dynasty Warriors, du même développeur, en visant plus particulièrement un jeune public, avec un design général à l'aspect manga et d'un style SD pour les personnages. Le contexte, s'il reste proche de l'Asie médiévale, est tout de même différent car il s'en éloigne : des éléments fantastiques font leur apparition. La trame du titre est basée sur un vieux roman chinois connu sous le nom de L'Investiture des dieux. Une version Game Boy Advance, intitulée Magical Hôshin, fut également commercialisée au Japon.
