It was released for the Super NES and MS-DOS in 1994. The cover art for the SNES version was drawn by Jim Lee. The following year, Blackthorne was released for the Sega 32X with additional content. In 2013, Blizzard released the game for free on their Battle.net PC client. In celebration of the company's 30th anniversary, Blackthorne was re-released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One as part of the Blizzard Arcade Collection in February 2021.

主人公であるカイルを操作し、サーラック率いる帝国を倒して滅びた故国の復讐を果たす事を目的としている。ブローダーバンドのパソコン用ソフト『プリンス・オブ・ペルシャ』（1989年）タイプの作品であり、細かなキャラクターの動作や多彩なアクションを特徴としている。
開発はブリザード・エンターテイメントが行い、ゲーム・デザインは『バイキングの大迷惑』（1993年）を手掛けたロナルド・ミラー・シニア、プロデューサーはミラーおよび『R.P.M.レーシング』（1991年）を手掛けたマシュー・フィンドリー、音楽は『バイキングの大迷惑』を手掛けたグレン・スタッフォードが担当している。
2013年からBattle.netを通じて英語版を無料で遊べるようになった。
