The aim of the game is to score the lowest number of points. It is played on courses consisting of a series of holes (usually a multiple of 9) similar to those of its parent, but the holes are short (usually less than 10 metres from tee to cup).
The game uses artificial putting surfaces (such as carpet, artificial turf, or concrete), a geometric layout often requiring non-traditional putting lines such as bank shots, and artificial obstacles such as tunnels, tubes, ramps, moving obstacles like windmills, and walls made of concrete, metal, or fiberglass. When miniature golf retains many of these characteristics but without the use of any props or obstacles, it is purely a mini version of its parent game.

ショットを打つためには、ジョイスティックを使って、ボールを打ちたい方向と距離にクロスヘアを移動させます。準備ができたら、ファイアボタンを押します。パワーバーのレベルが上がるのがわかります。バーが希望の距離に達したら、再度ファイアボタンを押します。ファイアボタンを離すと、バーは下に戻り始めます。バーを止めた位置が、ボールを打つ際のパワーを示します。パワーバーの底に達すると、精度バー上で横に動きます。精度バーの中央にはセンターラインがあります。センターの左側に寄りすぎると左に引っ張られ、右側に寄りすぎると右に引っ張られます。ボールを打つために適切なタイミングでファイアボタンを押してください。コースが難しすぎる場合は、練習コースオプションを訪れてみてください。プロになれる人はそう多くありません。
