A série é bem conhecida, tendo mais de cinquenta versões lançadas, o que a torna a série mais produtiva da Capcom. A franquia teve início em 1987 com o primeiro Mega Man, jogo que foi lançado para o Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Este jogo e suas sequências compõem a série original de jogos, mas foram criadas várias subséries spin-offs que se passam no mesmo universo fictício. Seu co-criador, Keiji Inafune, teve como inspiração para a criação do herói o Astro Boy. Além disso, o Mega Man iria ser originalmente branco, e não azul, para que as trocas de armas se destacassem melhor. A mudança se deu porque quanto mais fraca fosse a cor do personagem menos ele apareceria na tela, trocaram para o azul, pois possuía mais tons diferentes na paleta de 54 cores do NES.
