Like the original Donkey Kong Land, it came packaged in a banana-yellow cartridge. The game was followed by Donkey Kong Land III, which was released in 1997. The game has since been re-released via the Nintendo 3DS' Virtual Console and the Nintendo Classics service.

Diddy et Dixie Kong partent à la recherche de Donkey Kong sur l'Île du crocodile, qui a été capturé par King K. Rool. Donkey Kong Land 2 reçoit un accueil favorable de la presse spécialisée lors de sa sortie. Il est réédité en téléchargement sur la console virtuelle de la Nintendo 3DS en 2014 au Japon et en Europe et 2015 en Amérique du Nord. Le jeu devient disponible aux abonnés du Nintendo Switch Online sur Nintendo Switch le 25 novembre 2024. Le jeu connait une suite intitulée Donkey Kong Land III.
