The game was released in Japan on August 26, 1988, and saw a North American release sometime in April 1990. The game was never released in Europe and the game is not playable on PAL consoles. The story takes place in the post-apocalyptic year of 2777, after Earth has been devastated by nuclear war and natural disasters, with the island nation of Xexyz now being threatened by alien robots. The Japanese Famicom version is based on the tales of Urashima Tarō, features cutscenes throughout the game, a choice of three endings and has graphical differences in some of the NPCs.

El juego nunca se lanzó en Europa y no se puede jugar en consolas PAL. La historia tiene lugar en el año postapocalíptico de 2777, después de que la Tierra fuera devastada por una guerra nuclear y desastres naturales, con la nación insular de Xexyz ahora amenazada por robots alienígenas.​ La versión japonesa de Famicom se basa en los cuentos de Urashima Tarō, presenta escenas a lo largo del juego, una selección de tres finales y tiene pequeñas diferencias gráficas en algunos de los NPC.
