The concept and setting were inspired by a holiday trip in New Zealand by one of the Taito programmers. The player controls Tiki (ティキ), a kiwi who must save his girlfriend Phee Phee (ピューピュー, Pyū Pyū) and several of his other kiwi chick friends who have been kidnapped by a large blue leopard seal. While avoiding enemies, the player has to navigate a scrolling maze-like level, at the end of which they release one of Tiki's kiwi chick friends trapped in a cage. In 2007, the arcade game received a remake for the Nintendo DS under the title New Zealand Story Revolution, and another remake released in 2026 under the title THE NEWZEALAND STORY: Untold Adventure.

Ha per protagonista un piccolo kiwi in stile cartone animato chiamato Tiki, come la figura mitologica maori. È stato convertito per molti home computer e console del periodo, edito da Ocean Software nel caso di quelli occidentali; la versione NES è conosciuta col nome Kiwi Kraze solo in Nord America. Nel biennio 2005-2006 venne incluso in quattro raccolte dedicate al retrogaming Taito: Taito Legends per PC, PlayStation 2 e Xbox, Taito Memories Gekan solo in Giappone per PS2, e Taito Memories Pocket/Taito Legends Power-Up (Pocket di nuovo solo in madrepatria), entrambi per PlayStation Portable. In origine avrebbe dovuto essere un sequel diretto di Crazy Balloon, idea che fu del tutto accantonata, mentre l'attuale concetto nacque da uno dei programmatori della Taito che aveva fatto una vacanza in Nuova Zelanda.
