A Nintendo Entertainment System version developed by Rare was published in 1989 by Konami in Europe and by Konami's Ultra Games subsidiary in North America. Silent Service II was released in 1990. Tommo purchased the rights to this game and published it online through its Retroism brand in 2015.

Der vollständige Name des Spiels lautet Silent Service – The Submarine Simulation, wobei Silent Service auch eine gängige Bezeichnung für den Royal Navy Submarine Service, also die U-Boot-Flotte der Königlichen Marine des Vereinigten Königreichs ist. In Deutschland war das Spiel auch unter dem Titel Das U-Boot auf dem Markt.

Il seguito del gioco, Silent Service II, fu prodotto nel 1990. Per il suo notevole realismo, nella Germania Ovest il gioco (qui intitolato Das U-Boot) ebbe anche problemi legali, poiché in base alla normativa locale poteva essere ritenuto incitante all'aggressività.
