The game takes place in the Castle Shadowgate, residence of the evil Warlock Lord. The player, as the "last of a great line of hero-kings", is tasked with saving the world by defeating the Warlock Lord, who is attempting to summon the demon Behemoth out of Hell. The original Macintosh version was only in black-and-white, but color versions of the game were later released for the Amiga and Atari ST, and in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was generally well-received, and was followed by several sequels and remakes for various systems.

Il fut notamment publié par Kemco sur Nintendo Entertainment System en 1989. L'histoire du jeu présente le personnage principal comme étant le descendant d'une lignée de héros ayant seul le pouvoir de détruire un sorcier maléfique du nom de Lord Warlock. Ce dernier essaye de réveiller dans son château un monstre du nom de Béhémoth pour détruire le monde. Le héros a été téléporté par le magicien Lakmir devant le château pour éradiquer cette menace.

Es erschien als drittes und erfolgreichstes von vier auch als MacVenture-Adventures bezeichneten Titeln. Die Handlung spielt in einer Fantasy-Welt auf der Burg eines Hexenmeisters. Das Spiel ist bekannt dafür, eine große Vielfalt an unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten bereitzuhalten, den Spielercharakter sterben zu lassen. Im August 2014 veröffentlichte die Firma Zojoi, eine Gründung der ehemaligen Shadowgate-Entwickler, ein erweitertes Remake für Windows und Mac OS. Über die Plattform Steam wird seit Januar 2015 auch das Originalspiel wieder angeboten, das auf moderner Hardware lauffähig gemacht, dessen Inhalt und grafische Darstellung aber zur ersten Veröffentlichung vor fast 30 Jahren nicht verändert worden ist.

Il gioco ebbe un grande successo, generando un franchise composto da un romanzo, tre giochi e una serie a fumetti. Il 21 agosto 2014, a distanza di 27 anni dalla sua prima uscita, è stato pubblicato un remake di Shadowgate sviluppato e pubblicato da Zojoi per PC, Android, iPhone e iPod.
