It was the first adaptation of TSR's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) fantasy role-playing game for home computers, becoming the first episode in a four-part series of D&D computer adventure games. The other games in the "Gold Box" series used the game engine pioneered in Pool of Radiance, as did later D&D titles such as the Neverwinter Nights online game. Pool of Radiance takes place in the Forgotten Realms fantasy setting, with the action centered in and around the port city of Phlan. Just as in traditional D&D games, the player starts by building a party of up to six characters, deciding the race, gender, class, and ability scores for each. The player's party is enlisted to help the settled part of the city by clearing out the marauding inhabitants that have taken over the surroundings. The characters move on from one area to another, battling bands of enemies as they go and ultimately confronting the powerful leader of the evil forces. Il est la première adaptation en jeu vidéo du jeu de rôle médiéval-fantastique Donjons et Dragons publié par TSR. Il est également le premier volet d'une série d’une douzaine de jeux vidéo de rôle, généralement désignée par le titre Gold Box, publiés par Strategic Simulations et basés sur le même moteur de jeu. Le jeu se déroule dans l’univers fantastique des Royaumes oubliés, un décor de campagne de Donjons et Dragons, dans lequel le joueur contrôle un groupe d’aventuriers recrutés pour défendre la cité portuaire de Phlan contre une invasion de créatures démoniaques. Comme dans une partie standard de Donjons et Dragons, le joueur commence par créer un groupe d'aventuriers, qui peut inclure jusqu'à six personnages, dont il peut choisir la race, le sexe, la classe, les caractéristiques, l'alignement et l'apparence. Au début du jeu, il se voit confier la tâche d'aider les habitants de la cité à lutter contre les créatures qui ont pris le contrôle des alentours de la ville. Fue adaptado al Famicom (versión japonesa del NES) en 1991 y para el NES en 1990. Utilizó el motor Gold Box introducido por su versión de 1988 y luego mejorado en Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures. El juego (y el motor) presenta dos modos diferentes: perspectiva en primera persona para interacciones y exploración de PNJ y una visualización de combate basada más en el tablero de estrategia, donde los personajes y los enemigos están representados por iconos pequeños. El combate está basado en turnos y requiere maniobración cerrada para el enemigo por ataques de rango cerrado.

Pool of Radiance bildete weiterhin den Auftakt zu einer vierteiligen Reihe zusammenhängender Spiele, die aufgrund derselben technischen Grundlage als sogenannte Gold-Box-Reihe bezeichnet wurde und noch weitere Ableger mit eigenständiger Handlung hervorbrachte, unter anderem das erste grafische MMORPG Neverwinter Nights. Pool of Radiance erschien für die Plattformen Amiga, Apple II, Commodore 64, DOS, Mac OS, NES, PC-88, PC-98, Sharp X1.

Il gioco fu il primo a riprodurre in versione elettronica il regolamento di Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, il noto gioco di ruolo da tavolo, più precisamente l'ambientazione dei Forgotten Realms. Successivamente uscì anche per Apple II, Mac OS e Amiga, mentre la Pony Canyon lo pubblicò per i computer giapponesi PC-88, PC-98 e Sharp X1 e per la console NES. La versione Atari ST venne annunciata ma non risulta pubblicata. Pool of Radiance fu il primo gioco di ruolo della SSI basato sul sistema detto Gold Box e il primo di una serie con ambientazione Forgotten Realms, comprendente anche Curse of the Azure Bonds (1989), Secret of the Silver Blades (1990) e Pools of Darkness (1991). I personaggi creati per Pool of Radiance e salvati su disco si possono riutilizzare anche nei seguiti, nonché nel titolo non collegato Hillsfar (1989). Nel 2001 venne pubblicato un altro seguito di nuova generazione, Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor, che riparte dagli eventi di Pool of Radiance.
